OCTOBER 2005

EDITOR'S SOAPBOX

As you are all aware, our family reunion, which was scheduled for the July 1st weekend, was cancelled a few weeks before it was to take place.  The organizers really had the wind taken out of their sails when we all came to the realization that Grace was dying from cancer.  It was felt that we couldn’t in good conscience be celebrating our family when the wife of one of our “founding fathers” in the family was dying.  We do realize that with an aging population in the family that this sort of thing can happen more and more often, but hopefully not as we are in the process of a celebration.  Since the last reunion we have lost several family members and it really wasn’t very long ago.  Off the top of my head, I can recall that Uncle John Bakken, Aunt Margaret, Aunt Bertha, cousin Johnny, Aunt Edna and our brother Allan have all passed away since then.  Our nephew Cory and his wife Jess lost a newborn baby, Carissa, and now we’ve lost Grace.  I apologize in advance if I’ve missed anyone.

It was discussed that we could have the family reunion next summer instead and I expect that if that is going to happen that we will have to start organizing for that one of these fine days.  Whenever plans start to take shape, hopefully the organizers will let me know and I will use my "network" to let all of you know so that plans can be made.

There were still many of us home to the Strasbourg area for the weekend anyway.  Chris dubbed it, “ReUhlion Light”, which seems appropriate.

I was happy to be able to run into several nieces, nephews, and cousins that I don’t see often, as well as some old school friends at the Strasbourg Homecoming.  I had great fun attending the fashion show in the Strasbourg Hall and seeing some interesting people modeling lingerie.  Does anyone recognize this lovely “lass”?

DAD & EVELYN

Dad & Evelyn had a busy time on the weekend of April 23rd  when Landon and Marj got married. Evelyn’s daughter Sharon came from Winnipeg for the wedding and she stayed with them.  That afternoon Sharon accompanied them as they went to Strasbourg for coffee with the usual crew and it was a much expanded group of relatives.  Reinhold was in town for a visit, and Helen & Fred also drove up from Moose Jaw.  The usual bunch was there as well.
