APRIL 2003

EDITOR'S SOAPBOX

Come One, Come All: Larry and Sharon are hosting a Family & Friends Pot-Luck dinner at their place on Saturday, May 24th when Jo-Anne & Roy are home for a visit. People are welcome to arrive between 4 and 6 pm. If you are local and plan on bringing something to eat, please contact Sharon to help coordinate. I have requested that they conjure up the same really cool thunder & lightning storm that we all were able to enjoy last time. Dylan claims to be working on it. Interesting note: that dinner will be held one day before the "baby" of the family turns 40!

DAD & EVELYN

Dad & Evelyn finished up all the yard work in October.  They had a small crowd for Thanksgiving dinner, Bev with her girls plus Landon and Lynette.  They had unexpected company Nov 4 when Jim & Maryann stopped in for a short visit on their way home from a family wedding in Weyburn.   Larry & Sharon invited them to an early Christmas dinner at their home on Dec. 23rd.  They had some company on Christmas Eve and cooked for a small crowd on Christmas Day.  They spent the coldest part of the winter hibernating a lot, though they did get around to a lot of their usual places.  They are expecting Evelyn's daughter Sharon for a few days in May when she's home for Melissa's graduation.

JIM & MARYANN BRANCH

Jim & Maryann had unexpected company over Thanksgiving when Brian & Donna Feasey dropped in.  You may remember Brian and Donna are their friends from Medicine Hat years ago when Brian and Jim worked together.  They had a wonderful Christmas with their family. As part of her gift, Maryann flew to BC late in the winter to spend some time with her children there.

Joy was in Borden, Ontario on course and visited Reg's Mom & sister out there for Thanksgiving this year.  Joy returned home just in time to attend her cousin's wedding in Weyburn on Nov. 2nd.

Courtney was a flower girl for the wedding.  Reg went to Ontario late in March to visit his Mom for several weeks.

Sonya flew out for the wedding in Weyburn as well.  Sonya and Nick bought a house and moved in Nov. 24th.  Their new address is:  #32 - 65 Foxwood Drive, Port Moody, BC  V3H  4X2.  They were in Alberta for Christmas, dividing their time between both their families.

In February Steven accepted a transfer to a new London Drugs store closer to their home.  He's been enjoying the challenge of managing a larger store with a lot more staff.  Meredith is now working in sales and administration for a lumber company.

JEANNE & FRED BRANCH

Jeanne & Fred bought another car that they stumbled across on their way home one day.  It was too good a deal to pass up. Now if they could only get adequate parking for their vehicles, they probably wouldn't be fighting city hall.  Jeanne has been very busy working for both Gerry and Diane at each of their lottery booths.  They attended the Triffo family Christmas get-together in mid-December at Barry and Jean's.  Jean's Dad passed away in Manitoba just prior to that.  Jeanne has been very busy with income tax season again. Jeanne & Fred went to Yellowknife to visit Terry, Judy & Daniel from March 12-31. While they were there Daniel was off school for a couple of weeks of March break. Terry & Judy also took a few days off. Daniel celebrated his birthday while they were there. Judy privately rented the city pool for a birthday party. No one in the building except for their guests. The staff at the pool went all-out to make it a great time. Jeanne & Fred spent a couple of nights at Jim & Maryann's on the way home. They went to see Jim's store, which was very nice. Jeanne's a little bit concerned that Jim might be "losing it". For lunch one day he somehow bypassed the lunch that Maryann had prepared and instead took the remote control for the TV!!?? Do you suppose he'd really rather be sitting in front of the tv and it was some sort of Freudian slip?

Judy continued the streak the females in our family have with totaling off cars, though in her case it was a truck.

It wasn't much more than a fender bender but insurance companies just love writing vehicles off when they have any age to them at all. I believe Terry was able to argue his way out of that one and they are fixing the truck.

LARRY & SHARON BRANCH

Larry & Sharon had Thanksgiving dinner a couple of days late due to Sharon's work schedule.  Dylan won his court case in November, then it was appealed and he found out in March that the appeal was denied.  He had sold his original motocross bike to a young guy in the city and the new owners changed their minds after the bike was pretty much destroyed.. Dylan's curling team took second overall in the Regina Youth Bonspiel.

They've had some good cash wins this season.  They won the District Finals again this year, that's 5 years in a row now.  They advanced to the Provincial finals early in March which were held in Strasbourg this year.  Nice to have the home ice advantage.  It didn't help as much as they wanted it too though and they went home with the Bronze Medal when it was all over.  He is currently looking at different options for summer employment.  Dylan spent time over the March break working with Sharon's brother Dave at Crestview Chrysler.  He was doing car detailing.

They moved Amber to North Battleford where she's at a training centre for horses. She is a horse rider trainee. She will be able to get her certificates in the levels she wants and plans to teach riding lessons.  So far she is getting excellent marks on her tests.  The couple running the training centre have connections everywhere so it should be good for her career.  They show horses and are going to train cutting horses.  Amber is hoping to finish at North Battleford soon with two more riding levels.  Currently, she plans to be home in mid-May. There is a chance she could get on at a new training centre in Lumsden.  She made it home for a visit at the end of January and again in March to have a wisdom tooth out.

Sharon is still putting in a lot of hours at work and Larry is beginning to get calls for his business so it looks like spring really has arrived.  Larry and Sharon have generously offered to host a family and friends pot-luck dinner at their house on Saturday, May 24th when Jo-Anne & Roy are home for a visit.

JO-ANNE & ROY BRANCH

Roy & Jo-Anne had Susan, Rob, Alex & Erica over for an early Thanksgiving. We went to visit our friends,  Michelle & Kim, for their Thanksgiving.  I've been doing mystery shopping for another company, in addition to the two that I already shop for.  It's been great fun to do restaurant evaluations.  We had our kids here for an early Christmas this year.  We had to cancel our usual Christmas Day dinner with Michelle & Kim.  Roy came down with a bad cold and was out of commission for several days.  We spent a very quiet Christmas Day wearing our jammies, eating salmon and playing Scrabble.  I have to say, we enjoyed it very much. We bought tickets to all the events at the Men's Curling Brier which was held in Halifax this year in March.  We spent about 10 days there and had a great time.  We ate at one restaurant so many times that they were giving us free dessert and we were all on a first name basis.

The picture shows me with my 15 seconds of fame.  I was one of two people selected from the audience of 10,000 to make an attempt to "throw to the button" during the 7th end break in the semi-final game.  The picture shows me deciding what to do when my lobster "handle" came off my rock.  After I tossed my rock I sat on my tushie yelling, "Hurry!  Hurry Hard!"  Some players from the N.S. and B.C. teams came running from 2 sheets of ice away and did their darndest to sweep my rock in.  I ended up with full 12 foot!  Not bad for someone who has never curled.  (I'd have made the t-line if they had started sweeping sooner) The other competitor got some help from Briar Bear (the mascot) who kicked his rock in closer than mine. We were supposed to split first and second prize but I said I'd much rather have second prize.  I went home with an entire salmon (yummy), which I had Sobeys fillet for me and the other guy took a dozen lobster.

Roy has been busy working with his American clients and partners and enjoyed taking the time off for the Brier.  We plan on celebrating his 60th birthday at the end of April by going to our favorite old inn, the Blomidon at Wolfville and staying in their best suite.  We have tickets to see Stuart McLean with the Vinyl Cafe when he appears in Halifax in mid-April.  He's the "storyteller" who is on CBC radio regularly.  We also have our next trip home booked.  We got a great seat sale from WestJet who just started flying out to this part of the country.  We will be staying with Dad and Evelyn from May 21 - 30.

Rob was laid off work when the company he was with went out of business.  He is now enjoying being a house-husband again, at least for the time being.  They had company when Susan's Mom, Alvina, spent a week with them over the March break and will return again for a few days just before Easter.  Alex has been working hard at school and is very much looking forward to the summer break.  Erica is enjoying having her Daddy all to herself most days.  She will be starting school in the fall.

ALLAN & CAROL BRANCH

Allan had Thanksgiving dinner with Chris, Kelsey, a couple of their cousins and friends.  He had a turkey dinner a few days later at Larry & Sharon's.  Trev came home on Dec. 20th for 10 days.

Allan had Trev, Chris, Kelsey, Shanin and a friend of Kelsey's over for Christmas dinner at his house just prior to Christmas.  Allan spent Christmas Day with friends in Saskatoon, then drove down to Earl Grey for Christmas Day and spent the next couple of days visiting around Regina.  Business at the condo complex slowed down a bit with the cold weather but breaking ground for the building and having the weather improve has prompted a lot of interest again.  Allan was involved in a couple of curling leagues this year.  His group went undefeated in the mixed curling and his Monday morning group finished first in their league and first overall.  He looks forward to finishing the project in Regina so he can live full-time in Saskatoon again.  That will give him an opportunity to start up his "Hummer's Group" again.  He will happily explain this group to anyone who is interested.  Just buy him a beer and he'll gladly give a demonstration of what they do.

Trev has been doing lots of jumping out of planes and helicopters.

Being a Jump Master seems to suit him well.   In March he was on an ATV 4 wheeler course.  (sounds like fun!)  Then he's off to Wainwright for about 2 months of solid training, day and night, 7 days a week.

With the climate of the world these days they have to be prepared for anything.

Chris recently went to Edmonton to take a course, Visual Studio.net.  He's thinking about getting into more programming rather than just the technical end of computers that he has been concentrating on.  He enjoyed spending time with Trev when he was home for Christmas. Chris & Shanin have plans for some travelling soon.

Kelsey & Carol performed together in a dinner theatre.  They played a mother and daughter, which really wasn't much of a stretch.  Kelsey did well on her mid-term exams.  She has enjoyed working in sales, selling cell phones.  She was made the manager of her location and is enjoying that.  Kelsey headed out to Petawawa to visit with Trevor for a few days, Feb. 22-25.  She got together with Allan, Chris, Shanin and Shawn to celebrate her birthday in March.  She is just about finished university for the summer, just a couple of exams to go.

MANITOBA UPDATE

Imagine my surprise a few months ago when I got an e-mail from a cousin who I don't really know. Corey LeGrand is Norma & Al Kuly's grandson. While surfing the net one day he came across the Chatterbox. Even though he has attended the family reunions, it seems that I've never gotten around to spending any time getting to know them. I know the same is true for several family members. Following is the text of the update that he gave me, in his own words:

Great to hear from you.  Yeah like I said I was one of the grandsons of Norma and Al Kuly. I can give you a little bit of history here, see what I can remember.  John Uhl (not to be confused with John Uhl Sr.) was my great grandfather, he had 3 kids as you know:  Johnny, Norma, and Robert.  Now Johnny is alive and doing fairly good, not as young as he used to be, he and Marion, his wife, still live in Beausejour, Manitoba.  They have two kids Linda Gmiterek and Kim Steinke.  Linda lives in Beausejour - she has two kids, Melissa and Ashley. Melissa (22) and I are roomates currently in Winnipeg and Ashley is only 16, still at home.  Kim lives in Elkford, BC and has 2 daughters Brenda (21) in Lethbridge, AB and Kristen (17) still at home, graduating this year.

Ok so that's Johnny Uhl.  Now Robert.  I know very little of him, he and his wife Laverne divorced some years ago and I kind of lost contact with him.  I do know he is in Kenora, Ontario now and that's about it.  His two sons Jeff and Jason I have not seen since my grandma's (Norma's) funeral.

So now my side.  Norma has been gone for 10 years this past December 21st.  It's hard to believe, really miss that lady, she was what really kept all ties to the family open here in Manitoba.  Al is remarried to Violet Jones, now Vi Kuly.  He lives in Wenfield, BC near Kelowna.  He just moved there last May.  Not sure why, miss him quite a bit but that's life.  So Norma had 3 kids as you probably know, Cheryl(46), Timothy, and James.  Cheryl is my mom, she had 4 of us.  From her first marriage to my biological dad there is me (24), Tim (21), Paul (18) and from her second marriage to Don Meads we have our sister Megan (14).  James (38) is still single, has a girlfriend, not ready to settle I guess yet, he lives in Beausejour as well, works as a head cook at a restaurant there. Timothy Kuly has been gone for many years now.

So I can go into a bit of detail on my family.  My parents, Don and Cheryl Meads are living in Beausejour like I said.  My mom is a stay at home mom presently, working part time with the mentally challenged.  My dad is a truck driver, driving various parts of the countryside in U.S. and Canada.  I, along with Tim, currently attending the University of Manitoba.  I am going through for a social worker after spending the last 6 years working with the mentally challenged and differently abled workforce (this is my first year at university).  Tim is going through for teaching, targeting grades 1-4. We both live in Winnipeg but not together.  Paul is in his last year of school, graduates this June and Megan is in grade 9.  I'm still single, no kids yet, Tim has met a girl here in Winnipeg that he's been going out with for 2 years and they are pretty serious, so we expect to hear about an engagement anytime now.

DON & TRUDY BRANCH

Don & Trudy continue to keep busy with work and hobbies. Trudy has another job with User Friendly Computer Systems in Strasbourg.  She is signing people up for the high speed internet access and doing marketing for it as well.  Don is celebrating 30 years in the septic business this year.  Quite a milestone.

Danielle & Nicole were both home to celebrate Thanksgiving.  Danielle is working at Shoppers in Calgary as a pharmacy technician and enjoys her new job.  She's particularly in love with her new city because she finds so much to do there.  She has gone to several NHL games.   She managed to come home for a short time at Christmas.   She has a new room-mate now and is much happier with that situation.  She had company in mid-February when Trudy and Nicole came for a visit.  They had a lot of fun together and Nicole is returning again in late April for several days.

Nicole is going to Australia for October this year, playing rugby.  She plans to get into Education next year and has applied to several different universities.  She is now all finished with basketball for the year and just has a couple of finals to write.  She plans on taking some other classes to make up for the time she will miss when in Australia.

Justin has been doing some fundraising for his next youth trip, which will be to Hamilton.  His latest hobbies include any technology gizmos he can get his hands on and girls (never mind about getting his hands on them).

JACKIE & WAYNE BRANCH

Jackie & Wayne had a good sized crew in for Thanksgiving Dinner this year.  They bought another car to replace the one Jo-Anne broke in September.  However, Jackie must have been tired of it pretty quickly because she totaled it off on the 13th of January.  (no injuries) Now the hunt is on for another.  Jackie & Wayne went to see David Copperfield perform in Regina in December and thought the show was fantastic.  They had a large crowd in for Christmas dinner on the 25th.  Jackie won a few prizes for the Telemiracle tickets she sold.  She injured her shoulder in November.  She pulled the muscles and tendons at the rotator cup.  She was on compensation but has slowly increased the number of hours she is able to work.  She and Brandy drove up to Saskatoon near the end of February so Jackie could have some medical tests done on her arm.  They stayed overnight at a hotel and enjoyed a very nice dinner at The Cave.  Brandy explored around Saskatoon while Jackie was at the hospital.  Wayne has been working a lot of extra hours since his boss hurt himself.

Denise & Pat are happy to announce the birth of their first child, Tessa Marie. She was born January 21st.  Mom and daughter are doing great.

Pat and Jackie were both in the delivery room, making sure the doctors and nurses did everything right.  Denise and Pat are moving to an apartment in the north end soon.  Pat plans on going to school in the fall, taking a university entrance program so that he can proceed to the faculty of engineering.  Denise will be on maternity leave for awhile, then hopes to find another job.

Brandy had been off work again in the fall.  She & Craig planned a trip away at Christmas but never got to take it because she was called back to work early.  What with one thing and another she's been full time pretty much ever since then.  She hosted a baby shower for Tessa late in January and that was a great success.  Brandy, Craig, Wayne, Jackie and Craig's Dad all went to Tony Roma's to celebrate Craig's birthday in March.  Brandy & Craig celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary by replacing their deep freeze.  The one they had gave up and made quite a stink about things.  :-)  That was the 5th appliance they've had to replace in the last while.  They have had their motorbikes out already this year and are planning to ride them to Calgary in June when they attend a wedding.  They will then tour a bit in Alberta and maybe BC from June 27 to July 8.  Their friend Ken will be joining them with his bike and they are hoping to convince Jackie & Wayne to do the same.

Cory & Jess find that April is a busy month in their household.

David, Taiva, Cairo and Jess all have birthdays.  Jackie and Wayne will be celebrating their anniversary in April too. Above is a picture of David & Tyler with their new cousin, Tessa.

DIANE & GERRY BRANCH

Diane & Gerry are loving their new life in the city. Diane started a new job in October, managing the lottery booth in the Northgate Mall.  Thanksgiving was spent with Ida coming to their house.  Diane had a problem with a medication interaction early in November and spent a few hours in Emergency getting it out of her system.  They all spent Christmas Day in Strasbourg with Ida and headed back to the city on Christmas Day, stopping to visit Dad & Evelyn on the way.  Ger and Di have enjoyed a mostly friendly competition between their 2 lottery booths as to which sells more on any given day. Their whole family had a scare when Ida required emergency surgery early in February to have a growth removed.  It was ultimately found to be benign and Ida then spent time at Di and Ger's house recuperating.  Ida asked me to pass along some words to the family:

TO MY EXTENDED FAMILY: "The Uhl's" - My deepest appreciation for your encouragement and prayers during my hospital experience. I will ALWAYS remember your kindness!  Thank you!  Sincerely -  Ida.

Gerry also had a few words to say on this subject: As always, the support and love I feel when your/our family pulls together during a crisis has always amazed me, and I cannot express the value of that support. I regret that my own brothers and sisters could not band together with such strength and support as the "Uhl" family lends. - Gerry.

Frank has been getting lots of hours in at work and was considering an Assistant Manager's job.  He now answers to the name "Knarf". He moved into an apartment on 9th Avenue North with his school friend Eric.  Other than one emergency trip home for ketchup, he seems to be settling in fine.

Niki is thriving at her new school in the city.  She is still best friends with Morgan in Strasbourg and they manage to spend a lot of time together.  However, Niki is also making many new friends.  Her school marks have improved now that she is in a larger school with more challenges and she does well in almost every subject.  There really wasn't much room for improvement either because she has always done very well with her schoolwork.

She has been getting used to city bus routes and was very busy with curling over the winter.  She plans on going to basketball camp again with Morgan this summer.  Babysitting has kept her very busy too and she has an ever growing number of clients, most of whom she has known for years.  This girl is one serious planner too, her future careers include working at movie theatres & pizza places, life guard, restaurant hosting and, when she's finished all that and has graduated from high school, on to university.  She does like to be busy!

GERMAN BRANCH

Axel & Petra made a very special announcement at Christmas.  They are expecting the birth of their first child (apparently a boy) in mid-June.  They managed to spend some time with both sets of expectant grandparents over Christmas and deliver the good news in person.  For New Year's (Silvester in Germany) they traveled to the Toscana region of Italy.  They had a small wedding attended by family and close friends on April 4th, followed by a honeymoon at a fantastic French castle.

The picture above shows Petra, Axel, Birgit & Jurgen. Jurgen is Axel's brother and Birgit is his wife. Below we have Axel and Petra outside. Both of these shots are clickable to make them larger.

RELATIVELY SPEAKING

Fred Thalgott is doing some work for a local farmer.  Helen looked after a calendar kiosk in the mall again in the weeks leading up to ChristmasBrook started working for Citizen's Bank in Vancouver in October.  Their offer to pay her tuition was a big factor in her decision.  She already has a degree in psychology and is now going for one in communications.  She had a pretty exciting day just before Thanksgiving at the coffee shop she was working at when she sold a cup of coffee to Michael Stipe of REM after having a long involved debate with him about which quiche he should order.   Brook flies home to Moose Jaw for a few days in mid-April.

Patty & Art Smith and their girls were in Saskatchewan for Thanksgiving.  A few weeks prior to that, Art had been travelling in the Maritimes on business.  Both Jordan and Jessica play hockey and do a lot of power skating.  Jordan is in grade 6 and on the Student Council.  She's very involved with her hockey team and they will be playing a tournament in Medicine Hat in February.  She will go back to playing lacrosse in the spring.  Jessica is in grade 3 and her hockey team will be going to Edmonton for a tournament in April.  Patty and Art went salmon fishing last summer on the BC coast with some of the people Art works with.  Patty was very surprised at how much she enjoyed herself.  They brought 12 big salmons back with them.  Art was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for a software company in California and Patty is hoping to tag along on some of his trips there.  Art has become a "certified hockey coach" and is now doing some assistant coaching on Jordan's team.  Patty is the volunteer coordinator for Jessica's class and that keeps her busy a couple of days of the week.  Their family stayed in Calgary this year for Christmas, only the 3rd time in the 15 years they've been there.  They had Dave, Nancy and Amy come to visit them for New Year's and they all went to see a Calgary Flames game at that time.  They were off to the West Edmonton Mall for a few days in the new year, visiting friends.

Brian & Heather had company for Thanksgiving weekend at their place in Calgary - Reinhold and Grace, Terry, Michele & Steve & Brendan.  Brian is very much enjoying his new job and the whole family is pleased with all the opportunities in Calgary.  Adam is nearly as tall as Brian and still enjoys spending chunks of time on the computer.  He has on-line friends all over the world.  He and Brian have joined a robotics building club at SAIT.  Jenifer is now a Corporal in the Air Cadets.  She still maintains close contact with her friends in Stirling and the new friends she made last summer in cadet camp.  She's also expanding her local group of friends in Calgary.  Corbin is still in touch with his friends from Stirling too and has been making new friends in Calgary through some of his home schooling activities.  He has been taking Hapkido classes.  Hapkido is one of the martial arts that incorporates self-defence, gymnastics, and self-discipline.  So far he has earned 2 color stripes on his belt.  Heather continues to do some work for web-site clients but spends the largest chunk of her time on home schooling the kids.  She has gone to a drumming circle and dabbled in belly-dancing.  They decided to spend Christmas Day at their home this year with no company.  Brian arranged to have a local store deliver a completely cooked meal on that day as a gift to Heather.  They had Michele & Steve come for Boxing Day and stay for awhile.  Reinhold & Grace went to Rocky Mountain House for Christmas this year.  They drove to Saskatchewan for John Bakken's funeral in March. Heather's family dealt with the untimely death of Heather's 22 year old niece in February.  And continuing our family streak for totaling off vehicles, Heather's van was totaled recently in Calgary.  The other driver missed her exit off Deerfoot Trail and decided to back up, sideswiping Heather in the process.  Fortunately, even though the van was totaled, Heather was in it alone and she only suffered a hopefully minor whiplash.

Michele writes that her daughter, Kristina, and her boyfriend Ted, had their first baby on April 1st, Emma Michele Gullackson.  She weighed 7 lbs 5 oz.

They are living in Edmonton.  Kristina will be getting her schooling in hair design and esthetics soon.  Then Ted will be taking horticulture at Olds College.  Shayne and his girlfriend, Alyson, spent part of Christmas with Michele and Steve.  Steve is thinking that next year may be his year to retire from the military.  He will have 25 years in at that time.  They will probably then move back to Gibbons and work in Edmonton.  Brendan will be in grade 9 so that will give him the opportunity to spend all of his high school years in the same place.

Wendy, Dick and Chris spent Christmas in Strasbourg again this year.  Wendy's work slowed down somewhat just prior to the holidays, which made her life much easier in preparing for Christmas.  Chris was off school from Dec 18 to Jan 6, which was a nice break for him.  Dick had a great hunting season, filling all 3 of his tags.  That means a full freezer of food at their house!

Above is a picture of the wedding of Brenda & Garry's daughter, Dena, which took place on September 28, 2002. Pictured are: Garry, Brenda, Dena, Jason, Laura, Ted, with Matthew in the front row.

Agnes is very much enjoying spending more of her time with her special friend, Ron Morton.  They are living at 45 Crystal Dr., Copper Sands, SK, S4L 1B4.  They plan on doing a lot of camping in the motor home and making good use of her lot at Island View.

John Bakken passed away on March 22nd due to an aneurysm.  Aunt Elsie is coping with the help of her family.  His funeral was very well attended by a great many family members from all over the prairies.

MYSTERY TIME

For those of you who are still wondering about the mystery pictures from the last Chatterbox, the 4 guys with cigarettes in their mouths are:  Erwin facing the camera, Wilf on the right, Reynold Triffo with his back to the camera and Leonard Triffo on the far left.  The lovely "Goldilocks" was none other than Diane and Gerry's son, Frank.  Wasn't he a "dish"?

Our next "mystery shot" came from Brian.  He has been going through tons of old photos from his folks.  Keep watching this space and in a few weeks I will put in the "key" that will tell you who they all are. Please do note that when you click on the picture below, you will get a much larger image. The same is true of several pictures in the newsletter. When you run your mouse over the picture it will say if there is a larger version.
