Bear 1981 - 1995 Bear was born in November 1981 on a farm in the Bulyea area, the son of a Norwegian Elkhound, and probably a Samoyed or Terrier. When he was about 6 weeks old (in time for Christmas) he went to live with John and Kay Schaeffer. He looked so much like a baby polar bear, they named him "Bear". By the time he was 6 months old, they decided he would never make a watch dog, so they gave him to Jim & Maryann and their familly for a family pet. He lived with them for the next 13 1/2 years, until his death on October 25, 1995. By the time he was a year old, he showed he really was a good watch dog; keeping people from walking through the yard to get to the Clinic, when we lived at the house by the Pioneer Home. When we moved out to Uhl's Bay, he had his special route to follow each day to visit everyone. Mom and Dad's he visited every meal time, as there were always special treats there for him. He also loved to play with Frank, his special friend. When we moved to the West Coast he really missed them. He loved chilldren and when we went for walks we always had to stop and let the children pet the "pretty puppy". As our children grew up he made friends with the various "stray kids" we always had living here and was glad to see the grandchildren come to visit. He also liked the kids downstairs playing with him. He was also very popular with the lady dogs and left many sons and daughters. Until his illness he had a great memory, remembering friends and enemies. Although he was quite sick and weak at the end, he was still a great watch dog, announcing all visitors. He is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Jim & Maryann, Joy & Reg, Andi & Brandi-Lee, Sonya & Steven, as well as all of his friends. Go to Page 7 |
