EULOGY - WERNER UHL

Werner was born on August 30, 1930 in the Bulyea District to John and Caroline Uhl. He attended Edenkellie School where he met Agnes Triffo.

Werner and Agnes were married in Regina at Redeemer Lutheran Church on June 7, 1954. Together they farmed near Long Lake in the Bulyea District. The farm was a mixed operation with turkeys, chickens, a few cows, sheep and wheat.

Times were hard and Werner had to go where the work was. He took a summer job in Churchill, Manitoba where he worked on a tug boat.

In 1963, the family moved to Strasbourg where Werner took a job with the Co-Op Food Store for a short time. During that year Werner found work in sales with the Combined Insurance Company. With his gift of gab and his sense of humour and determination, he did quite well.

In 1964 Werner, Agnes, David, Cathy and Patty moved to Regina and Werner worked at Canadian Motors selling Fords. He even tried his hand in the restaurant business with Tub's Drive Inn, but people didn't eat out much back then and he was soon back to sales, at Simpsons in the sporting goods department.

In 1970 Werner started with IPSCO. He worked in the steel division at a variety of jobs, including Locomotive Operator, a job he truly enjoyed. He remained with IPSCO until he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1985. After unsuccessful surgery, he was given 6 months to a year to live.

Werner did not give up. After recovering from surgery and radiation therapy, with his ever present positive attitude and by the grace of God, he continued to live. He enjoyed a trip to Toronto, Niagara Falls and the Welland Canal in August 1990 and a drive through the mountains to Vancouver in August 1991.

The cancer began to take its toll in 1992 and he moved to Parkside Extendicare. He never once complained or felt sorry for himself. At Parkside he was a popular patient. The nurses called him a special person and a gentleman. Werner lost his battle with cancer at 4:37 a.m. on January 6, 1995 with his family at his side.

Werner enjoyed life. His bright smile, ever-present sense of humour and positive outlook were admired by all who knew him. In all the years we knew him, we never heard him swear!

He befriended every person that would come his way: young, old, even teenagers. Everyone liked hanging out at the Uhl house. Werner was an avid reader. He rarely watched TV, except for baseball. And he liked cars ... buying, selling and talking cars ... it drove Agnes nuts.

Werner was a loving husband to Agnes for 40 years and was an exceptional father for Dave, Cathy and Patty.
